Toyota recently announced that the company plans to make cars that are able to self drive on the road by 2020. Unlike other technology companies such as Google, Toyota takes safest approach by driver assistance instead of self driving technology as reported by the Wall Street Journal. The system will be named "Support for advanced pilots" rather than "Highway Teammate" as initially mentioned.

In separate occasion, the largest automaker in the world told the Wall Street Journal that they believe not their car company fell behind Silicon Valley in the development of robot cars. Toyota also mentioned that the company has spent two decades studying autonomous driving technology.

According to Toyota, for fully autonomous driving technology to implement the kind of mass market cars to be possible, the cost of every car driving sensors must go first. in line with this, Toyota is coming with a wide range of driving technologies semiautonomous their cars for the mass market over the next few years.

in an attempt to make the plan a reality, Toyota has hired Gill Pratt for his AI (artificial Intelligence) and robotics department. Previously, Pratt led DARPA Robotics Challenge before working for Toyota. The company would also collaborated with MIT and Stanford to do R & D for intelligent vehicles for roads and robotic aids for people's homes. Collaboration reported to be worth $ 50 million.
