A document from the National Bureau of Economic Research has been done to try to calculate the environmental benefits of electric vehicle ( EV) when compared to conventional vehicles outside the role of incentives to encourage people to buy electric vehicles. The document was written by four economists at the University of North Carolina (UNC) Greensboro, Dartmouth College, Middlebury College and UNC Chapel Hill.
The four economists came up with a modeling framework to analyze the electric vehicle policy in three different components. First, the model of choice of the consumer to choose between electric vehicles and classic cars, on the other hand, they add to the EV effect on air pollution in each of the power plants, and finally the model compares the emissions from these power plants and emissions from conventional cars in one place.
the authors use the total emissions per mile of 11 electric vehicles of different batteries on sale in 2014 and they are comparable to most similar petrol cars such as Ford Focus EV compared regular tune Fiat 500e or by regular report Fiat 500 electric vehicle that does not have the classic car models such as Nissan Leaf and Mitsubishi i-MiEV, they compared them with classic cars they believed to be roughly equivalent with features such as Toyota Prius or Chevrolet Spark. The authors then compare kWh / mile with classic cars fuel electric vehicles as well as pollution from nitrogen oxides, sulfur oxides, small particles and volatile organic compounds.
The result shows that EV can cause more damage when the drive out of a number of California and Texas cities that the small population means relatively little air pollution; However, it might be a good idea to drive EV in Los Angeles where there is a lot of traffic. However, the model also fails when applied to Chicago and New York eventhough these two cities have much more air pollution from petrol cars.
