Self Driving Golf Carts considered a step before Self Driving Cars -

MIT and the National Research Foundation in Singapore formed a center for research and technology known as the SMART. It is essentially the MIT research center outside of Cambridge, Massachusetts. The center is known for creating a self driving golf carts and currently being tested in a large public garden in Singapore for a period of six days. In addition to this a smartphone application is also designed to allow customers to be able to book a trip to one of 10 stations.

SMART aims to maintain the simple golf cart technology as possible. The technology uses laser rangefinders off the shelves as sensors mounted at a different height and a dynamic virtual bumper surrounding the intended path of the golf cart. Therefore, if an object enters the virtual bumper area, the basket will do whatever it takes to keep it out of the beach.

The six days of testing have led to some accidents. One of them is that there was a large lizard crossing the road carts and carts seems it did not know how to handle the situation. Another drawback is that these golf carts speed is 15 mph on average.

These self driving golf carts are considered a step before the cars driving the car. SMART plans to use the technology for its car-sharing, which is almost similar to the use of the car driving in the future.
