Elon Musk Tesla opens on autonomous vehicles, auto driving rules and competition Hotz -

A recent article in Bloomberg Businessweek about a super hacker George Hotz profile. Apparently it took him about a month to build a car driving car in his garage and said the technology vision chip made by Mobileye and used by Tesla is absurd. He even added that Tesla CEO Elon Musk, has offered to give him a contract if its technology is considered better than Mobileye. In response, Tesla said that the company is stuck with Mobileye and refuted some of the challenges of Hotz on autonomous cars.

On another occasion, Musk said that making a demoware easily done while producing the software is difficult. Production software should work on millions of different routes across the world and in a wide range of circumstances if it is winter, summer, rain and dust.

George Hotz apparently has been introduced as a possible recruitment Musk Tesla. However, during their discussions, Hotz said Musk that would come with a better solution than Mobileye. Musk has some skepticism about what Mobileye has hundreds of engineers who have worked on this issue for some time and, therefore, Hotz was proposing a bet.

The bet was that the car that uses Hotz solution would be able to stay in the lane Intestate 405 from Los Angeles to San Diego. Musk declined the proposal, as he suspected Hotz would make it work for a stretch, but it will not work on roads and highways everywhere and all the time.

U.S. Department of National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Transportation categorizes the automation of vehicle five levels. Level 0 means that the driver is in complete control of the car while level 4 means that the vehicle supports all functions and monitors critical road safety conditions for the entire trip.

The major automakers are working on autonomous driving technologies at different stages. Google is working on a completely autonomous prototype that replaces the driver completely while other automakers such as Volvo and General Motors are moving in stages. Volvo recently introduced Level 2 capabilities, while General Motors will provide the level 2 semi-autonomous function called Super Cruise for its 2017 models feature Super Cruise will next hands-off track, braking and speed control under certain conditions road.

Tesla autopilot function, on the other hand, has just published an update via over-the-air software last October. Initially, the function will be assisted by computer parallel parking, direction and changing lanes on roads and the alert upgraded system for side impacts. In addition, it also uses radar, ultrasound, GPS navigation and cameras.

Autopilot also be learning algorithms continuously and it works like a network such as when a car learns something, it will be broadcast to all other cars with the same model so that they learn all the same thing. Asked about the next generation of Autopilot, Musk did not disclose a lot and it just said it would be an important announcement.

Musk said that Tesla would have full autonomy in about two years. However, he expects regulators to lag behind technology as it is very probably take them about five years or more to ensure that the technology is safe.
