Hyundai patented a Smartphone Feature Disabler for its cars models -

Based on the study, we find that most road accidents often caused by human drivers as they tend to be distracted while driving on the road. It could be because they are using their mobile phones or talking to other passengers while driving the car. A simpler solution for this problem is to simply not use your smartphone on the road, however, it seems that it can not be easily done as there could be someone trying to reach you for urgent matters . Therefore, car manufacturers are coming up with ways to overcome it.

General Motors, for example, is exploring ideas to come with head and eye tracking to ensure that the human driver pays attention to the road. Hyundai, on the other hand, offers an easier way to just turn off the phone while driving.

Hyundai recently patented technology to limit or disable the use of some of the characteristics of mobile devices that might cause distractions to the user as mentioned in the published patent. This function depends on the speed of the vehicle to determine the smartphone functions are safe to be used, including text messages or voice calls and can be limited to be just for the area around the driver's seat or for the entire car depending on the configuration.

the idea is to place antennas around the vehicle to detect and monitor the cellular signal. If the signal is detected, the system will determine which features should be disabled and that has not be turned off depending on the time of day and the importance of the caller. Therefore, it is not simple or disable the function. The only thing is that the mobile phone needs to install a special program for all works.

Although it is an interesting concept, but it might take some time before we can see it installed in Hyundai vehicles.
