A team of researchers led by Raul Rojas, professor University of Nevada, Reno, had completed a journey of 1500 miles of Nogales in Mexico in a special high-tech 2010 Volkswagen Passat wagon named Autonomos. The self driving car was sent to Berlin, where he agreed to be tested on public roads since 2011.

The research team consisted of two researchers from Freie Universitat Berlin, Raul Rojas and an employee an autonomous vehicle research firm. Rojas has been working on intelligent systems since 1986 and autonomous cars since 06.

Autonomos was equipped with seven laser scanners, video cameras and seven new radars and a very accurate GPS device. Self driving systems used all entries all these systems and use them to navigate smoothly throughout the trip. The road has been preconfigured advance; However, maneuvered the car, braked and changed lanes on the fly. The only problem encountered was when there was no marking present on the carriageway. However, despite all this, the team arrived safely in the destination of about one week after the departure date. The car traveled between 250 and 300 miles a day.

Although the test was successful, however, according to Rojas, they are not ready to deploy yet these systems to the public. He said autonomous cars need special cards to operate safely, mapped in which the number of lanes, the structure of road markings and the position of exits, intersections and possibly traffic lights were marked. He added that these cards were not commercially available in all countries, and therefore each autonomous car project had yet to produce its own cards.
